Nikkei 225 Closes Higher as Exports Slide for 6th Month -- City Index Asia

The Nikkei 225 closed higher in trading this morning (December 19th) after official figures revealed the nation's overseas trade suffered another blow in November.


New data shows that exports fell for the sixth month in a row, highlighting the issues the newly-elected Liberal Democratic Party face as they settle back into office after three years in opposition.


Shipments slipped by 4.1 per cent in November compared to one year ago, with exports to key trading partner China declined by 14.5 per cent as a result of anti-Japanese business sentiment in the world's number two economy, stemming from a territorial dispute between the countries over islands in the East China Sea.


Furthermore, exports to the European Union -- which is embroiled in its own debt crisis -- plunged by 20 per cent.


At the end of the day in Tokyo today, the Nikkei 225 rose by 2.3 per cent to an index value of 10160.4 points.

Air Carrier in the Americas Signs Letter of Intent for Up to 30 Bombardier CSeries Airliners

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - December 19, 2012) - Bombardier Aerospace announced today that an airline, which is based in the Americas, has signed a Letter of Intent to acquire 12 CS100 airliners with options on an additional 18. At this time the airline has requested to remain undisclosed.

Based on the list price of the CS100 airliner, a firm-order contract would be valued at approximately $870 million US and could increase to $2.08 billion US should the 18 options also be converted to firm orders.

CSeries First Flight Test Vehicle and Test Airframe

 

The wings for the first CSeries flight test vehicle (FTV1) are being mated to the fuselage at the company's final assembly facility in Mirabel, Quebec, after arriving from Bombardier Aerospace Belfast in December. Assembly of FTV1 is progressing smoothly in preparation for first flight by the end of June 2013. Additionally, assembly of the Complete Airframe Static Test (CAST) article for the CSeries aircraft is complete and the instrumentation and loading system is being finalized for the start of airframe tests in January.

Designed for the growing 100- to 149-seat market, the 100 per cent new CSeries aircraft family combines advanced materials, leading-edge technology and proven methods to meet commercial airline requirements in 2013 and beyond. Silver's Latest Selloff -- City Index UK

LONDON--(Marketwire - December 19, 2012) - City Index UK -- So what happens to silver as it falls victim to metals' selloff? The recent damage in metals -- particularly gold -- is a result of the unwinding of this summer's buying gold against euro as a flight to safety from Greek election woes. The unwinding of that long gold/short EUR began to unravel these past few weeks after the dissipation of Eurozone tail risk (Greece debt buybacks, Spain bank bailout and preliminary Banking Union).

 

Silver is up 14% year-to-date, compared to gold's 7%. It is the fourth best performing commodity after wheat, soybeans and platinum at 24%, 22% and 14% respectively. Speculative activity among futures' traders has also been kinder for silver, with the number of net longs reaching a 22-month high of 41,275 contracts earlier this month. In contrast, gold net longs fell to 166,000 contracts, the lowest in three weeks.

Unlike gold, silver has persistently respected its four-year trendline, currently finding support at 29.20. Nevertheless, weeklies are likely to extend losses below 31.00 and onto the 30.70 low reached in November. Due to a most constructive technical foundation on the monthly oscillators, we expect stabilisation to emerge near the 29.50 trendline. At which point, gradual interest is seen building to guide the metal back up to 31.00, followed by 37.00 longer-term trends both bullish, the 1.0600 level can be considered a key level to watch.
